Two memos for Community Services Committee February 27: Recognizing Burl-Oak Naval Veterans and Furthering Transparency

February 25, 2013

I have submitted two memos to Community Services Committee this week. Both are important, for different reasons:

1. It is my honour to support a request from the Burl-Oak Naval Veterans to Name the Promenade in Spencer Smith Park Naval Veterans Walkway. The Naval Ships Memorial monument in Spencer Smith Park is regarded as one of the 12 best war memorials in Canada, attracting visitors from across the globe. Please have a look at the memo and letter.

2. In the spirit of openness and transparency, I have brought forward a memo listing the Activities Involving the Office of the Mayor during my current term of office. Following some questions from other members of Council regarding these activities, I am providing information regarding my level of participation, the funds raised and their intended purpose.

The role of the Mayor is reflected in Procedural By-law 93-2010. As head of Council, I promote the purposes of the City of Burlington as well as public involvement in the municipality’s activities. I act as a representative of the municipality locally, nationally and internationally. I participate in and foster activities that enhance the economic, social and environmental well-being of the city and its residents.

I take this role seriously, and have been involved in a number of initiatives with community partners since the beginning of my current term of office (December 2010), either directly through active participation, or indirectly thought the use of name and title in the promotion of an event.

I will be asking Council to support me in bringing forward a staff direction to: “Direct the City Clerk to research other municipality’s policies and practices regarding fundraising by members of council and donations and sponsorship to council member-organized events and report back to the Budget & Corporate Services Committee.” Please read the full memo for more details.

Comments? Thoughts?

I would like to hear your thoughts about these two items for Community Services Committee to consider or any other items. 1. Since the inception of the Burlington Community Foundation in 1999, the foundation has welcomed, valued and respected the transparent role of the standing Mayor of Burlington in support of key foundation activities and initiatives – the objectives of which are always to further the social and economic vitality of our city and the well-being of all of our residents. It is critical that the Mayor of Burlington – past, present and future – continue to demonstrate a collaborative leadership approach to help ensure we all work together in support of our great community.
